Verbal Irony

Definition:

Verbal Irony is when words express something contrary to truth or someone says the opposite of what they really feel or mean.

Examples:

1) “Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: ‘I am sure they are sour.’ ”

2) “Today was a very cold and bitter day, as cold and bitter as a cup of hot chocolate; if the cup of hot chocolate had vinegar added to it and were placed in a refrigerator for several hours.”
