Foreshadowing

Definition:

A warning or indication of a future event.

Examples:

1) A pipe is going to burst, but before it does the family notices a small dark spot on the ceiling and choose to ignore it.

2) In Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" Romeo says he prefers to die sooner than live without Juliet's love : "Life were better ended by their hate, than death prorogued, wanting of thy love.
